Van Amersfoort Racing have signed 17-year-old Charles Leclerc to race in this season's Euro F3 series

Formula Renault 2.0 Alps runner-up Charles Leclerc has signed for Van Amersfoort Racing for this season's FIA Formula 3 European Championship.

The 17-year-old impressed while testing with his new team in December and said he is joining the best series for young drivers to develop in.

"I'm delighted to have the opportunity to race in the Formula 3 European Championship for Van Amersfoort Racing," said Charles Leclerc. "This series is just the best for a young driver who want to learn as much as possible and improve. Van Amersfoort are extremely experienced and have already secured several successes."

The Monegasque driver only switched into single-seat car racing from karting last year and finished a creditable second in his debut Formula Renault 2.0 Alps season, taking two victories and one pole position.

"Charles has got the potential to play a major role in the Formula 3 European Championship," Team Principal Frits van Amersfoort said. "Now it's up to us to provide him with the preconditions that allow him to make full use of his potential right."
