Jelley began his racing career with an intensive tuition course at the Silverstone Racing School, the result of a 19th birthday present from father Robert, who used to be an amateur rally driver. Possessing an inherited passion and innate ability, Jelley Jr benefited from the Silverstone experience, competing in the circuit's BRDC-backed Formula Ford Championship in both 2000 and 2001.

In 2002, he joined Medina Sport to compete in the Avon Junior Formula Ford Zetec Championship, achieving a top ten points position before, in 2003, achieving the runner-up spot in the re-named HarrierZeuros UK Formula Ford Scholarship Championship, having led the title race for part of the season.
