Watts shines at Silverstone.
The Promatecme run Lola-Dome of Danny Watts will start fifth and seventh respectively on the grid for Sunday's British Formula Three Championship races at Silverstone.
Returning to the sharp end of the grid and continuing the impressive pre-season testing form that saw it singled out as a Dallara beater, the black and British racing green F106/04 equalled its best starting position in the hands of the impressive Watts.
The all-British squad were in contention at the front of the 22 car field throughout both of the 30 minute qualifying sessions and ended the first of them just 0.4 seconds from pole position. BRDC backed Watts, who only announced his deal to start a second season in the category just days before the opening rounds further enhanced his growing reputation with a polished performance that will see him fighting at the front of the pack tomorrow.
24 year old Watts was delighted the way things went on his home track during the sessions and commented afterwards, "It was a big step forward for us today and we are on for a strong result tomorrow. Our aim is the podium and I think that is very definitely on."
Danny was also happy with the continuous development of the Neil Brown prepared Mugen powered chassis that he, Promatecme and Lola engineers have worked on in just the handful of pre-season tests that were undertaken, saying; "We are at the stage now where we are fine tuning the car and although the track conditions were slower at the end of the sessions the car still felt very quick. I had some traffic issues on a couple of really hot laps but that is the same for everyone in some respects. But on the whole we have enormous potential to really frighten all the Dallaras here this weekend."
Lola's F3 engineer Adam Airey backed up those comments at the end of a fruitful day for the Huntingdon constructor, saying; "They were both very positive sessions for us, and as Danny says we are now chipping away the tenths and getting closer to where we know the car can be, which is right at the front. There is a real fighting spirit in everyone at the moment and I am sure that will come to the fore tomorrow."
With a notoriously fickle spring weather forecast indicating a high possibility of showers on Sunday, Watts is also relishing the prospect of putting his thorough circuit knowledge to good use. "I know all the wet weather lines around the International circuit and the Lola-Dome is very driveable in damp and wet conditions so I think that I will be the only one not too bothered what the weather does on Sunday."
The Lola-Dome not only caught the eye on the track as attention was also fixed on the Promatecme pit after the session when three girls from one of the UK's leading Gentlemen's club - Smile, posed for a scrum of photographers and TV cameras.
"It was the only point in the day that I got slightly distracted," said a wide-eyed Danny after the race. "But seriously it is great for the series that we have brought some glamour to the weekend. I just hope that everyone is ready for six more of them coming tomorrow too!"
