Abu Dhabi: GP2 and GP3 Test times (2)

Rio Haryanto proved quickest of anyone on day 2 of the GP2 post-season testing in Abu Dhabi, while the GP3 timesheets were headed by British driver Oliver Rowland.

Trident's Raffaele Marciello continued to impress in the first two and a half hour GP2 session starting at noon when he picked up where he left off on Tuesday at the top of the early timesheets, but it was Rio Haryanto driving for EQ8 Caterham who subsequently led the way in bringing the times down by over half a second to 1:49.203s in the cooler night time conditions at the end of the second day of testing.

The versatile and flexible Sam Bird was back in action with Russian Time for a second time, although on Wednesday he was back in a GP2 car standing in for his 2013 team mate Tom Dillmann who had been scheduled to take part in this week's test sessions but who had been sidelined with a neck injury after a crash with Jon Lancaster early in the Saturday feature race.

There were no interruptions to the midday session, with Arthur Pic bringing out the only red flag of the night time test when he stopped his ART on track at turn 19 just 40 minutes into the session.

In the GP3 sessions, it was Oliver Rowland who proved the star turn of the day topping both morning and afternoon sessions for Marussia Manor Racing. The 21-year-old British driver was runner-up in this year's Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, and has made steady progress up the timesheets over the two days so far at Abu Dhabi before setting his best time yet in the afternoon session with a lap of 1:55.600s just pipping Patric Niederhauser (ART) and Tuesday's pace setter Dean Stoneman (Koiranen GP) in the final ten minutes.

There were a number of brief stoppages for minor incidents during the session: Ivan Taranov (Russian Time) made light contact with the barrier at turn 8 and Kuba Dalewski (Trident) spun to bring out red flags during the morning session while Carmen Jorda (Koiranen GP) spun at the end just as the chequered flag came out. Marvin Kirchhofer (MW Arden) caused the only red flag of the afternoon session when he stopped on track midway through.

Rowland will be back in action again albeit for ART GP on the final day of post-season testing at the Yas Marina Circuit on Thursday, which will take the same format. Among the drivers joining the GP2 field will be Conor Daly at ART, Facu Regalia at Barwa Addax and Stoffel Vandoorne moving to DAMS for the day.
