Brazilian veteran Mauricio Gugelmin was in hospital last night after suffering a heavy crash in opening practice for this weekend's Firestone Firehawk 600 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Gugelmin was running alone when his PacWest Reynard-Toyota spun out at turn two, hitting the wall and leaving the driver in need of medical attention. This resulted in him being extricated from the car and transferred to a local medical centre for checks.

According to Dr Steve Olvey, CART's director of medical affairs, Gugelmin was transported to North Richland Hills Hospital in Fort Worth for precautionary x-rays. The Brazilian was apparently awake and alert at the scene of the incident, and Olvey said that he had only sustained minor bruising from the seat belts and helmet strap, with no other apparent injuries.

Since Gugelmin was not rendered unconscious from the incident, he remains eligible to compete for the remainder of the weekend. Per CART rules, should a driver be rendered unconscious he is ineligible to compete for the remainder of that race
weekend.
