Indy 500 pole-man Scott Sharp's bid to earn his first '500 victory ends on lap one when he strikes the wall in his Kelley Racing Dallara-Aurora after leading the field past the green flag.

The 85th Indianapolis 500 got off to a dramatic start when pole-man Scott Sharp made heavy contact with the outside retaining wall in Turn One after taking the initial lead from Robby Gordon and Greg Ray.

The 85th Indianapolis 500 got off to a dramatic start when pole-man Scott Sharp made heavy contact with the outside retaining wall in Turn One after taking the initial lead from Robby Gordon and Greg Ray.

Sharp's Kelley Racing Dallara-Aurora got a piece of the grass in Turn One and was catapulted into the wall, nearly collecting Gordon who assumed the race lead. Sharp was unhurt but his face of utter dejection told the real story.

Sharp had been fastest in practice, fastest in qualifying and fastest on Coors Carb Day while his Kelley team also won the 25th Coors Carb Day Pit Stop challenge. The team's hopes now rest with Mark Dismore who sits in fourth place behind Gordon, Ray and Gil De Ferran.

This is the second year in succession that the pole-sitter will be classified 33rd and last after Greg Ray crashed on lap 77 of last ear's race
