The Spaniard was transferred to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula for precautionary X-rays, after cartwheeling into the gravel trap following a lap 66 collision with the rear of Mauricio Gugelmin's PacWest entry.
Servia, driving in his first season with the new Sigma Autosport team, appeared to have suffered an innocuous accident until the nose of his Lola dug into the fringe of the gravel trap and its momentum bounced him high into the air, completing two complete revolutions before crashing back to earth.
The second-year CART driver was carefully extracted by the Simple Green medical team, which happened to be stationed at the same corner, but was clearly awake and alert as he was transferred to the waiting ambulance.
Although initial checks at the circuit's medical centre appeared to be positive, the driver was then transferred to the local hospital for further X-rays after complaining of pain in the back of his neck.
Servia was eventually released having sustained several bumps and bruises, but no serious or life-threatening injuries.
