Second spot on the starting grid went to Jaques Lazier, with a lap of 32.5926 seconds in the No. 2T Menards/Johns Manville Dallara/Chevrolet/Firestone, while rookie Tomas Scheckter, Cheever's team-mate was third.
Good and bad fortune came to Buhl who set a great time to place him fifth on the grid, but the joy was shortlived, however, as he crashed into the outside retaining wall between Turns 1 and 2 immediately after his final lap. He was awake and alert and responding to commands while being transported via helicopter to Loma Linda University Medical Centre in Loma Linda, Calif., for further evaluation.
