Indy Racing League officials have informed Penske Cars that it will not be selected to produce IRL chassis next year, when the series reviews which companies it will allow to become constructors.

According to Brian Barnhart, the IRL vice-resident of operations, several applications met the required 1 April deadline, and a letter had been sent to notify potential constructors that an extensive review and interview process would be used to narrow the manufacturers allowed to supply cars in 2003. Indy Racing League officials intend to finish the review of the proposals by the end of April.

"The Indy Racing League is moving forward in its selection of approved chassis suppliers based upon what it believes is in the best interests of the league and its participants," Barnhart said, "The league acknowledges the high level of product and excellent customer service that Penske Cars has provided in other series, but we have decided we will not consider its application further."

Factors the league will consider in applicants include experience with the Indy Racing League, financial stability, production capacity, technical support ability and plans for use of the chassis in other racing formats.

"The league appreciates the valuable contribution that Team Penske has made to the IRL during its first season as a full-time participant," Barnhart continued, "We look forward to them continuing with us at such a high level of competition."

Penske Cars and other chassis manufacturers not selected to supply chassis in 2003 will be allowed to resubmit applications for the 2004 season prior to the 1 April 2003.

The company has won one race so far this season, and is the reigning Indianapolis 500 champion, using Dallara chassis.
