McGrath drove Hinkle's car at 'The Brickyard' between 1950-55, winning the pole in 1954 and leading four races for a total of 70 laps.

McGrath qualified third in 1951, led 11 laps and placed third in the race. He qualified the car in the same position the next year, led six laps and finished 11th. He was right back in third again for the start of the 1953 race and came home fifth.

McGrath put Hinkle's car on the pole in 1954 and ran out front for 47 laps before sliding back to third in the final rundown. McGrath was back in his familiar third-place starting position in 1955 and led six laps, but a magneto problem ended his race after 54 laps in 26th place.

Hinkle, a retired oilman, drove Class A sports cars in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) races until he was 71.
