Borg-Warner Trophy grows.

The Borg-Warner Trophy, presented annually to the winner of the Indianapolis 500, is growing to accommodate the likenesses of winners through to the 2034 race.

A new base was constructed and attached to the trophy this year to add capacity for the sterling silver, bas-relief visage of future Indy winners. Every driver who has won the race since Ray Harroun captured the inaugural race in 1911 is featured on the world-famous trophy, which made its inaugural appearance in Victory Lane in 1936.

"This expansion of the world-renowned Borg-Warner Trophy ensures a place for Indianapolis 500 winners to be honoured for the next generation," said Indianapolis Motor Speedway's Joie Chitwood, "We appreciate Borg-Warner's commitment to continuing the heritage and prestige of one of the most famous trophies in the world."

The 88th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday 30 May, with the build-up beginning with Indianapolis Star Opening Day yesterday [Sunday].

"Every Indianapolis 500 is memorable, and this year's race has the potential for some especially noteworthy outcomes," said Borg-Warner CEO Tim Manganello, "But no matter who wins, we're looking forward to adding another face to the Borg-Warner Trophy.

"The Trophy has long been a symbol - to our employees, customers, and race fans the world over - of achievement, competitive performance, speed and technology. We couldn't be more proud of our continuing association with this icon of excellence."

The previous base was comprised of three rows of faces, while the new one is five rows tall, 15 pounds heavier and 4 inches taller. It will accommodate 48 images, 18 of which are already mounted.
