Defending Bombardier 500k champion Al Unser Jr completed an incident-free day of testing alongside Tomas Scheckter and Felipe Giaffone at Texas Motor Speedway as their respective teams completed preparations for next weekend's Bombardier 500k.
The trio participated in a Chevrolet test on the 1.5-mile superspeedway despite having only recently finished the Indianapolis 500 and the month of preparation that accompanies the biggest race on the IRL schedule. All three piloted their Dallara-Chevrolet combinations around the Fort Worth venue, before approaching thunderstorms shortened the afternoon and evening test by 45 minutes.
Unser will be starting his second race for the Patrick Racing team in the Bombardier 500k, having joined forced with respected car owner Pat Patrick to debut at the Indianapolis 500. The veteran won last year's race before being forced to sit out the start of the 2004 campaign, while Scheckter has won pole for the Bombardier-backed race in both 2002 and 2003. Giaffone, for his part, was the runner-up in the June 2001 event at Texas.
Next weekend, Indianapolis winner Buddy Rice will be seeking his second career IRL victory, and a first at Texas Motor Speedway - as will point leaders Dan Wheldon and Tony Kanaan. Two-time Texas IndyCar winner Sam Hornish Jr will lead the opposition alongside Penske team-mate Helio Castroneves, the 2001 and 2002 Indy 500 victor.
