'Bittersweet' Fontana win for emotional Dario.
Dario Franchitti and Tony Kanaan, two of the late Greg Moore's closest friends, put on a fitting show to end the IRL IndyCar Series' tenure at the two-mile California Speedway, finishing 1-2 at the track that claimed Moore's life in 1999.
Both eventual winner Franchitti and runner-up Kanaan were nearly overcome with emotion as they crossed the line just inches apart at the end of 200-laps of racing in what has been the longest and most gruelling IRL IndyCar season to date.
Starting from the pole position, Franchitti led the initial three laps then settled into a top-five position before assuming the front-running position by the 140-lap mark. With brief exception he paced the remainder of the race, leading a total of 68 laps as he and Kanaan battled together over the final seven lap green flag stint to the finish.
Kanaan's runner-up spot secured Andretti-Green Racing's fourth 1-2 finish of the season and while Franchitti couldn't get up to third in the final standings, ahead of Sam Hornish Jr, the Scottish born driver was still full of emotion at winning at a track that claimed the life of Moore in a grisly crash coming out of turn two in the 1999 CART season finale.
"This is a bittersweet win because I lost a good friend here six years ago," said Franchitti. "It was important for me to win here today for several reasons. Tony and I battled all day, and this is a great way to finish the season. For Tony to have helped me out at the end really means a lot. There's more to racing than kicking the heck out of your teammate; you have to work as a team and we proved that today."
