Ed Carpenter, the other driver involved in Paul Dana's fatal practice accident at Homestead-Miami Speedway on the weekend, has been released from hospital after only suffering minor injuries in the 200mph smash.
The Vision Racing driver had spun exiting turn two at the Florida facility, and was collected at unabated speed as Dana continued on his lap, apparently unaware of the danger ahead and the flags waving to signal it. While Dana succumbed to his injuries after cartwheeling over the Vision machine, Carpenter was pronounced in a stable condition on his arrival at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.
After a period of observation, he was released last night with just a bruised lung to show for his involvement in the IRL's first fatality since Tony Renna died in a testing accident in 2003.
Carpenter will remain under the supervision of Dr Steve Olvey despite his release, and has not yet been cleared by series medical director Dr Henry Bock to race in this weekend's second IRL round on the St Petersburg street course.
