An irate Tagliani is believed to have had a physical confrontation with the 2003 Champ Car World Series Champion on pit road after Tracy appeared to drive into the Team Australia drivers' path on lap 52 of Sunday's race as he recovered from his own spin.
Both drivers suffered serious damage as Tagliani arrived at the 90 degree turn six area of the 1.448-mile San Jose only to find Tracy slewing across the track from the runoff directly into his path. As a result of the accident both were instantly eliminated from the race, leading to the heated scenes on pit road later on.
Race officials have said that the pit road incident will be investigated quickly and that punishments will be dished out if need be.
"We understand that this is a very competitive series and our athletes can get caught up in the heat of the moment but we do not condone this type of behaviour," said Champ Car President Steve Johnson. "We will review this incident thoroughly and determine what needs to be done to make sure things like this do not happen in the future."
