Mario Dominguez is hoping to put a successful end to what he has described as one of the worst years of his Champ Car career by building on his Surfers' Paradise result at the season finale in Mexico City next weekend.
In only his second race with the Rocketsports team, having previously raced with Forsythe and Dale Coyne this season, Dominguez took second place behind first-time winner Nelson Philippe to secure his best result of the year, and a first podium of the campaign for Paul Gentilozzi's team. Safe in the knowledge that he will see out the season with Rocketsports, the Mexican is keen to get another good result on home soil.
"Because [Surfers'] was the race before Mexico City, we have got a lot of momentum going for us when we show up there, so I'm very, very motivated and so is the rest of the team," he explained, "We want to get a great result and that's going to help a lot. I will be ready to go to race in front of my countrymen, with the hopes of finishing the season in victory lane with Rocketsports."
Dominguez put his success in Australia down to bonding immediately with what was his third crew of the season, and admitted that he hoped that the relationship would continue.
"It was only my second race with Rocketsports, so it is a great result for the team as we continue to develop our relationship together," he said, "The team has struggled this year in terms of having good results and, with everything that's been going on with me this year, the worst year of my life in terms of switching teams - not once, not twice, but three times - we seem to be a perfect fit for one another. I would also like to thank Paul Gentilozzi for making me feel at home."
The Mexican also heads home knowing that his team helped give him perhaps the best set-up of the season 'down under', even if he couldn't quite become the first repeat winner on the Gold Coast.
"The car was good throughout the entire race, we had a good race strategy and good pit-stops. It was a great race with Nelson at the end, but he deserved to win as he did not make any mistakes. We raced hard, but clean, and that's what racing is all about. He's a good friend, so I'm happy for him."
