One half of Forsythe Racing's 2007 Champ Car Atlantic Championship squadron has been confirmed with news that the team will partner with Red Bull and Red Bull Junior drivers John Edwards and Robert Wickens.
Fifteen year-old American sensation John Edwards and 17 year-old Canadian prodigy Robert Wickens, both products of the Red Bull Junior Team programme, have joined the Forsythe squad with primary sponsorship from Red Bull. Edwards, Wickens and the Forsythe Atlantic squad have set their sights squarely on the $2 million dollar prize to be awarded to the 2007 Atlantic Champion.
"Red Bull has shown an incredible commitment to driver development here in North America, paving the way for young open wheel stars to get the opportunities they deserve," stated team boss Gerald Forsythe. "We are honoured to be selected as beneficiary of this development programme as two of the brightest stars on the horizon have come on board with us for 2007.
"John and Robert are proven winners, but beyond that they are two incredible young men who have committed themselves to reaching the pinnacle of open wheel racing. We look forward to the 2007 Atlantic season with great anticipation."
Kentucky born Edwards became the youngest driver ever to be awarded an FIA license in 2004 when, at just 14 years of age, he was granted permission to compete in the Formula Renault Eurocup, where he has spent the last two seasons.
"It's great to be joining Forsythe for next season," said Edwards. "I can tell already that they have one of the best packages, and I can't wait to see how we compare to the others at the first race in Las Vegas. I've enjoyed working with everyone on the team, and it's great to be working with people that understand every detail of the car."
Canadian born driver Wickens comes to the Atlantic series as the reigning Formula BMW USA Champion, having spent two years in the category following a glittering karting career.
"Ever since I can remember I have always looked up to Canadian Forsythe drivers like Greg Moore, Alex Tagliani, Lee Bentham, Jacques Villeneuve and of course Paul Tracy," enthused Wickens. "So to be able to say that I am a part of Forsythe Championship Racing is a real honour to me and a dream come true. I plan on making the most of it.
"It looks like the Atlantic Championship is once again shaping up to be highly competitive. That being said, I always expect a lot out of myself, and 2007 will be no different. I think if we can achieve consistent top five finishes through out the season, we will have a very good chance of winning the title."
