Title winner German engineers Penske promotion.

Tom German, the man who helped guide Sam Hornish Jr to his third IRL IndyCar Series title and that elusive first Indy 500 win, has been named as the new technical director for Marlboro Team Penske.

A Penske employee since 1997, German will dovetail his new role with his existing position as Hornish Jr's race engineer on the #6 Penske team, a position he has held for the past seven years.

As race engineer, German guided the #6 team to 16 wins, including two Indianapolis 500 victories, 22 pole positions and three championships in both CART and the IRL.

"I'm looking forward to continually improving our competitive position in the IndyCar Series as Technical Director of Penske Racing, Inc.," said German. "I think that the 2007 season will be a challenge, but we certainly have the right people in place to meet our goals next year."

Roger Penske's IRL outfit previously did not have a designated technical director role and German is expected to slot in around the chairman himself, team president Tim Cindric and general manager Clive Howell.
