Eddie Irvine has turned down an opportunity to join Bentley's 2003 Le Mans assault, preferring instead to keep his limited options open in Formula One.

Eddie Irvine has turned down an opportunity to join Bentley's 2003 Le Mans assault, preferring instead to keep his limited options open in Formula One.

According to Britain's Daily Telegraph, the Irishman was asked to join the pre-race favourite's line-up, possibly alongside fellow F1 refugees Allan McNish, Johnny Herbert and JJ Lehto, as it seeks to follow in the tyre tracks of stable-mate Audi and scoop victory in the world's most prestigious sportscar event. Bentley is planning to revert to a two-car line-up next year and, although no crew has yet been signed, it is looking for a Le Mans veteran, such as Irvine, to lead the second squad.

The four-time grand prix winner finished second at La Sarthe with Toyota in 1994, but has indicated that he would rather stay in Formula One if an opportunity presents itself. It is understood that he is still chasing the second seat at former employer Jordan for 2003.
