Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing has confirmed that it will field three of Porsche's most successful drivers in the #90 911 GT3 RSR at the Le Mans 24 Hours in June.
The team will feature factory drivers J?rg Bergmeister, Patrick Long and Sascha Maassen at the wheel of the familiar 'lightning bolt-liveried' Porsche when the Michael Petersen-owned undertakes its first solo effort at the race. Last season PWL joined forces with American Le Mans Series rival Alex Job Racing, winning the LM GT class. The team and drivers will get their first taste of Le Mans on Sunday, when they take part in the official test day for the event.
Maassen, nominally the leader of the driving squad, was part of the class-winning squad in 2003, and has the last two ALMS GT titles under his belt. He also holds the record for greatest number of ALMS wins by any one driver. The German will act as mentor to team-mates Bergmeister, who will be contesting his third Le Mans, and Long, who will be making his debut at La Sarthe on the test day.
"This is the best thing that can happen for me - to be with the winning team from last year," Bergmeister enthused, "I will do my best and it will be nice to do it again. This is my first time with the Petersen/White Lightning team, but I know all of the guys from the ALMS, so I think it should be good fun for me."
For American youngster Long, the call-up came as something of a surprise after he only graduated from the Porsche Supercup last season.
"I didn't expect to be at Le Mans at all, and to be invited to be with the most potent driver and team combination is quite an honour," the former FFord ace admitted, "I look at my first opportunity at Le Mans as a very solid chance to win. I can't tell you in words what that would mean."
While the #90 Porsche was shaken-down prior to the 12 Hours of Sebring last month, it will be driven with intent for the first time on Sunday. Petersen will sub for Maassen at the test - allowed by the regulations as the German is a Le Mans veteran - while the lead driver is at the Porsche Rennsport Reunion II in Daytona.
"I'm so excited to be back at Le Mans," the owner-driver admitted, "Our driver line-up is a very powerful one, and we are very excited to bring Sascha, J?rg and Patrick into the family. We're ready to set the standard on Sunday and, with some good luck and the talent of all the guys, we can get a good result in the race as well."
