Marco Apicella has escaped serious injury in his high-speed accident during qualifying for the Le Mans 24 Hours - although the same cannot be said for the JLOC Isao Noritake Lamborghini he was driving at the time.
The Italian driver, who was set to line up alongside Koji Yamanishi and Atsushi Yogo in the GT1 class Murcielago GTS-R, was chasing a quick time during the opening qualifying session on Wednesday when he went off heavily into the barriers - destroying the car and forcing the session to be red flagged for 45 minutes as he was taken to the medical centre and the damaged car removed from the track.
With no serious injuries reported, Apicella was able to leave the trackside medical centre on his own, but was then taken to hospital for further evaluation.
It remains to be seen whether or not the Murcielago can be repaired in order to start Saturday's race.
