Carmichael overcame an early challenge from fellow Honda rider Windham to pull away to convincing wins in both 250cc motos. Windham would later complain of dehydration, unsurprising given that the event was held in 90 degree heat and high humidity. Australian Chad Reed was third overall, with 3-4 finishes on his Yamaha.
"This wasn't an easy day," said Carmichael, who regularly trains in this type of heat near his home in Florida. "Kevin (Windham) rode great. I tried to check out, but he was right there. I just had a little better fitness today and that made the difference."
Carmichael tied the record of three-straight wins at the Red Bud circuit set by Mike Kiedrowski in the early 1990s. RC also now owns 34 AMA Motocross wins and 93 combined AMA Motocross and Supercross victories. The win also marked Honda's 10th 250 national win at Red Bud.
Meanwhile, another Floridian, James Stewart, won the 125cc division to move the Kawasaki star from 17th to 12th in the standings with six rounds remaining. Brock Sellards and Kelly Smith finished second and third respectively, both on Yamahas.
Stewart had to earn both moto victories, running down the order on the first laps, but charged hard to take the lead, then pull away to dominating wins in both races.
"I actually fell over in the second moto," Stewart said. "I don't know what's up with that. I guess I'm going to have to go home and practice harder."
Having missed the first four rounds of the series through injury, can 'Bubba' still make up the ground lost...?
Sellards earned his best result of the year and moved to within three points of fourth-ranked Eric Sorby. Third overall Smith moved up five spots to 15th in the standings with his 4-3 results.
The series now moves to Troy, Ohio next Sunday, July 13.
