Alex Marquez focusing on Moto2 title before MotoGP future
Alex Marquez says his priority is achieving his “dream” of becoming Moto2 world champion before turning his attention to a potential move up to MotoGP in the future.
Marquez has recently been linked with a Jack Miller’s announcement that he’s close to signing a new Ducati deal to stay at the Italian team for 2020 it appears the younger brother to Marc Marquez has limited options over a premier class switch.
While rumours have also linked the Spanish rider to Tech3 and Avintia, the current Moto2 championship leader says he is focused on his current season and if he is to remain in the intermediate class in 2020 it will be with the Marc VDS squad.
“In my hands I can only work on myself on track by winning races and trying to win this championship,” Marquez said. “It is my dream and what I need to achieve and what I need to do.
“What is coming you never know but what is clear is that if I do stay in Moto2 I will stay with Marc VDS because as a team we are working so well.
“I have the right people on my side which is the most important thing but we’ll see what happens in the future. I am doing my work on track and we’ll see what happens.”
In a rampant run of form, Marquez has gone from being winless in Moto2 for 25 races to taking victory for the past three consecutive rounds at Le Mans, Mugello and Circuit de Catalunya.
The three straight wins have seen him surge into the lead Moto2 standings, with a seven-point advantage over Thomas Luthi, and he pinpoints a breakthrough from Jerez which led to his current run of success.
“In the past I had the speed but we missed the quality, especially during the races, so after Jerez we found it a little bit with some different changes,” he said. “Small ones in the mentality because when you believe in yourself and you know you can do it, it is easier.
“Now we are in good form so we need to keep working like this as the season is long.
“This is one track [Assen] that I like and in the past I have had good results but the objective is the same like the last races; to try to get the maximum points and I will be happy if we go home with lots of points as all the races are important for the championship.”
