Moto2: Canet joins Angel Nieto team for 2020
Moto3 title contender Aron Canet will move to the Moto2 class in 2020, riding for the Angel Nieto team.
Currently competing in his fourth grand prix season, the Spaniard is just one point behind Lorenzo Dalla Porta heading into this weekend's British MotoGP.
"I am excited about the step up to Moto2," Canet said. "After four seasons in Moto3 I am fighting for the title but I have decided to take the decision already to move up in category and to do it with the Ángel Nieto Team, because Jorge Martínez 'Aspar' is an important figure in motorcycling and he and his team are offering me everything I want, which is a local team and a family environment.
"I am happy to be joining the Ángel Nieto Team, who have celebrated a lot of titles, won a lot of races and even more podiums. They have a lot of experience and will be able to give me the advice I need to help my career progress."
Canet currently races for Max Biaggi's team, while the Aspar-run Angel Nieto squad fields Jake Dixon and Xavi Cardelus on the KTM chassis. That will need to change for 2020, following the Austrian factory's withdraw from the class.
"It is very important for us to bring a rider like Aron Canet into our project," said Jorge Martinez 'Asapr'. "He is a winning rider, who is fighting this season to become Moto3 World Champion.
"Aron has matured a lot in recent seasons and in 2019 he is proving that in terms of his riding he is a level above his rivals.
"As a Valencian team we are delighted to sign a local rider and it gives me even more pleasure that he came through one of the projects I started at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo – the Cuna de Campeones – as did the likes of Nico Terol, Sergio Gadea and Héctor Faubel, and others.”
Canet's team-mate is still to be confirmed. Dixon has a two-year deal, but has been frustrated at persistent handling problems with the KTM chassis. The former BSB title runner-up has claimed four points so far in his rookie season, with Cardelus yet to score.
