Moto2: Xavi Cardelus returns to replace Aron Canet at Aragon
Xavi Cardelus will make a return to the Moto2 World Championship after being called up to replace the injured Aron Canet at Aspar for the latest round at Motorland Aragon.
Canet was forced out of the most recent French MotoGP after suffering a crash in morning warm-up with injury ruling his out of at least this weekend’s Aragon event, round 11 of the 2020 Moto2 World Championship,.
In his place comes Andorran racer Cardelus, who comes back to Moto2 fresh from completing the 2020 MotoE World Cup, where he was placed 15th overall having finished each race and scoring a best result of ninth.
Cardelus previously competed at Moto2 level in 2018 and 2019, though he failed to score any points.
“I am happy to have another opportunity with the team and also in Aragon, where I recently competed in the Moto2™ European Championship and finished third. This time I will do it with a different bike, but I trust that the adaptation will be easy. I want to show what I couldn't show last year, but we race without any pressure.”
Canet was ruled out of the Le Mans event after a crash left him with a laceration to his finger and a hand injury. The Spaniard, runner-up in the 2019 Moto3 World Championship, has emerged as the fastest of the rookie contingent in 2020 on the Aspar Speed Up and is currently on course to finish as 'rookie of the year'. He is 10th overall with five races remaining, with a best finish of fifth in Jerez.
