Moto2: Jake Dixon to miss Portimao finale after wrist surgery

Jake Dixon has been forced to call an early conclusion to his 2020 Moto2 World Championship season after undergoing surgery on his injured wrist ahead of this weekend’s Portimao round.

The Briton fell ahead of the Valencia Europa round just over a week ago and suffered a fractured wrist, forcing him out of that round and the second Valencia event a weekend later.

The Petronas Sprinta Racing rider has now confirmed he won’t compete in Portugal after a two-hour operation on his wrist at Spire Manchester Hospital was required to repair several broken bones and cartilage damage.

“It’s been a tough time since my FP2 crash at Valencia two weeks ago. Unfortunately, the injury was worse than expected, so we had to undergo surgery on it. I want to say thanks to Dr. Mike Hayton and his team for the great job they did on Friday, and also to my family, team and fans for the support they have given me this past week. 

“It’s definitely the worst way to finish what was a great second year in Moto2™, but I’m sure this will make us stronger next year. It’s a pity I can’t participate in the final round of the season because I’m just really looking forward to being back on my bike. 

“We will follow the rehabilitation plan the doctor has prescribed to be fit as soon as possible.”

The premature end to Dixon’s season came just as he was in the midst of an upswing in form that saw him lead much of the Le Mans race, before scoring his maiden top five result in Aragon. He has re-signed with Petronas Sprinta for what will be his third season of Moto2 in 2021.
