Can Oncu to make Moto3 history in Valencia
Reigning Red Bull Rookies’ Cup champion Can Oncu will make Moto3 history in Valencia by becoming the youngest-ever rider in the series with his wildcard entry for Red Bull KTM Ajo.
Having confirmed his 2019 plans with a full Moto3 campaign with the Ajo squad, the Turkish rider will make his debut in the lightweight class this weekend with the Red Bull-backed team alongside Darryn Binder.
Assuming Oncu starts the Valencia Moto3 race on Sunday, he will become the youngest rider in Moto3 history at 15 years and 119 days.
The Turkish teenager is duly relishing the opportunity to get an early start on competing in Moto3 at the world level, fresh from a Moto3 test at the Valencia track earlier this year, and accepts it will be a key learning weekend in preparation for 2019.
“I feel happy, excited and a little nervous ahead of this first wildcard appearance in the Moto3 World Championship,” Oncu said. “I can’t wait to get on the bike on Friday.
“A few days ago we did a test here at the Ricardo Tormo Circuit and it was quite positive; we felt good. Although it's not one of my favourite circuits, this track has many corners and that's what I like.
“My goal is to have a good weekend, learn, and on Sunday have a good race that gives us the best possible result.”
Marc Marquez will continue to hold the outright record as the youngest world championship debut rider when he contested the 125cc 2008 Portuguese Grand Prix aged 15 years and 56 days.
