2024 Indonesian MotoGP: Friday practice as it happened

Updates from Friday practice at the 2024 Indonesian MotoGP as it happened.

Hot on the heels of last weekend’s Emilia Romagna round, the ‘flyaway’ stage of the 2024 MotoGP World Championship kicks off with the Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika.

Despite Jorge Martin losing out on victory to Enea Bastianini on the last lap in Misano, Francesco Bagnaia’s seventh DNF of the season handed the Pramac rider a 24-point title lead over the reigning champion.

Bastianini begins the final seven rounds holding third in the world championship, 59 points behind Martin but just one ahead of 2025 replacement Marc Marquez.

Martin won last year’s Mandalika Sprint race to briefly take the 2023 title lead, before a mistake while leading the grand prix handed the initiative back to Bagnaia.

Aprilia’s Maverick Vinales and Yamaha’s Fabio Quartararo joined race winner Bagnaia on the 2023 Indonesian Grand Prix podium.

FP1 starts at 10:45am local time (3:45am BST) with Practice - which decides the top ten riders with direct access to Qualifying 2 - beginning at 3pm (8am BST).

Quartararo was on a great lap there, but had a moment on the front at Turn 13. Grip on circuit still at a bit of a premium.

The time attack phase of this session coming up could be dramatic as a result.

Bezzecchi jumps up to second on his VR46 Ducati with a 1m30.415s.

08:19

Fabio Quartararo looked frustrated with his Yamaha as he ran wide at Turn 2.

08:17

Jack Miller is out there again on KTM's new aero it homologated at Misano last week.

Shows just how valued the Australian's feedback is for KTM to allow Miller to race with that given he's off to Yamaha next season.

Practice is underway at Mandalika!

07:54

Just five minutes to go till pitlane opens for second practice at Mandalika for the MotoGP class.

07:50

The Moto2 lap record went in the session that has just finished.

In MotoGP, for reference, the lap record is a 1m29.978s. In FP1, the best time was a 1m30.689s.

07:48

As always, the result at the end of Practice will determine who goes through to Q2 directly on Saturday morning and who has to go through Q1.

07:45

Oliveira out

The big news coming into Practice is Miguel Oliveira's wrist fracture, which has ruled him out of the remainder of the weekend.

The Trackhouse rider suffered a nasty highside in FP1 and was taken to hospital for scans on the injury.

07:44

Conditions at Mandalika are bright, dry and hot for second practice.

The track was very dusty for FP1, though it looks to have improved a bit judging by the Moto2 session that is just ending.
