Recap the 2024 MotoGP Thai Grand Prix

27 Oct 2024
08:09

incident

Morbidelli clears out Quartararo at Turn 8 while trying to overtake. That will very likely be a penalty.

08:08

Gap at the front is closing up. Bagnaia only 0.5s behind Martin now.

08:08

incident

Bezzecchi has crashed at Turn 1.

08:07

lap 4/26

Martin still leads but had a big moment at Turn 11 there. Miller fastest rider on track in seventh.

08:07

Sprint winner Bastianini has had a rotten start to this race. He's gone from second to 10th.

08:06

Quartararo is doing a great job holding Binder at bay. The KTM rider is looking quick in these conditions!

08:06

lap 3/26

Martin leads by 0.8s across the line as Marquez is piling pressure on Bagnaia now.

08:05

Binder takes fourth from Quartararo into Turn 8. The Yamaha fights back at Turn 9 though and takes the place back!

08:05

lap 2/26

Martin leads by 0.4s onto lap two from Bagnaia and Marquez. Acosta moved ahead of Quartararo for fourth - but he runs well wide at Turn 3 and drops right down.

08:04

Scary moments for a few on that first lap.

08:03

Martin is wide at Turn 3 and the title challengers run side by side, but Martin leads into Turn 4.

08:03

race start - lap 1/26

Martin gets a great launch. He leads from Bagnaia and Marc Marquez.

08:00

warm-up lap

The warm-up lap is underway.

07:56

Just five minutes to go!

07:54

tyre choice

Looks like everyone is on the medium front and rear rain tyre for the start of this 26-lap race.

07:52

Weather update from our man on the ground, Pete McLaren:

"Just went out for a look. It's strange, pitlane soaked but it's really only light drizzle. But dense cloud so not going to dry too easily I suspect."

07:51

It's worth noting, in 2022 in Thailand Bagnaia had a great race in wet conditions having previously struggled in those conditions. A pre-race pep talk from former team-mate Jack Miller proved very helpful to Bagnaia that day.

07:50

Just 10 minutes to go until lights out.

07:50

After yesterday's sprint, Jorge Martin now leads the championship by 22 points over Francesco Bagnaia.

This is a big grand prix for both, but this weather will just be heaping the nerves on both.

07:45

Today's race will be the last for Di Giannantonio in 2024 as he heads off for surgery next week on the left shoulder he dislocated in Austria.

07:43

starting grid

Row 1 - Bagnaia, Bastianini, Martin

Row 2 - Bezzecchi, M.Marquez, Quartararo

Row 3 - Acosta, Di Giannantonio, A.Marquez*

Row 4 - Vinales, Morbidelli, Zarco

Row 5 - Binder, Espargaro, Miller

Row 6 - A.Fernandez, Rins, Nakagami

Row 7 - Mir, R.Fernandez, Marini

Row 8 - Savadori

*Alex Marquez will have to start from the back of the grid after his warm-up lap crash.

07:40

The race has officially been declared wet.

That's crucial for two things: bike swaps will be allowed, and tyre pressures will not be monitored.

07:39

Race build-up

Good morning and welcome to live coverage of what is set to be a dramatic 2024 MotoGP Thai Grand Prix!

Rain is falling and there has already been drama. Alex Marquez has crashed on the sighting lap at Turn 11. Rider ok, but that is a disaster for the Gresini rider.
