Emilia Romagna MotoGP: Sprint as it happened

Text coverage of qualifying and the sprint for the 2024 MotoGP Emilia Romagna Grand Prix as it happened.

Jorge Martin looks to extend a seven-point lead in the MotoGP standings with back-to-back Misano sprint victories on Saturday at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

The Pramac rider led every lap of the San Marino GP sprint despite starting from fourth on the grid, but will have his work cut out for him this time around after Francesco Bagnaia dominated to take pole earlier on Saturday at the Emilia Romagna GP.

The factory Ducati team rider the strongest on long run pace on Friday - though Martin was very closely matched as a duel between the pair this weekend is brewing.

Marc Marquez has the momentum of back-to-back grand prix wins coming into the Emilia Romagna GP and is looking to slash a 53-point championship deficit, but a crash in qualifying has left him with work to do from seventh.

The sprint begins at 2pm BST.

Marquez was ready to go out but has gone back into his garage. Looks like maybe he's waiting for the pack to come back round so he can get a tow.

10:25

Everyone bar Marquez is now heading out for their final runs. Can anyone challenge Martin's lap record?

10:24

It's not very close on the times - 1.867s splits the top 12. Martin's lap has really blown the field away.

10:24

It's all quiet on track right now and the top 12 looks like this:

  1. Martin
  2. Bagnaia
  3. Acosta
  4. Marquez
  5. Bastianini
  6. Morbidelli
  7. Quartararo
  8. Vinales
  9. Bezzecchi
  10. Oliveira
  11. Espargaro
  12. Binder
10:23

There's a bit of a bump at Turn 3 and it looks like that's what Marquez has crashed on when he picked up the throttle and unloaded the front tyre.

10:23

Marquez is back in pitlane and he does have his number 1 bike prepped, after it was repaired following an FP2 crash.

10:21

Incident

Marquez has crashed again in Q2 at Misano! He's fallen at Turn 3. He has a bit more time to get back for his second bike this time around and is currently fourth.

10:20

That was a statement lap from Martin as it puts him 0.344s clear of Bagnaia!

10:20

All change again as Martin goes top with a 1m30.245s, which is a new lap record!

10:19

Tight between the top two at just 0.025s splitting them.

10:19

First laps on the board and Bagnaia leads with a 1m30.879s from Martin, Marquez, Bastianini and Acosta.

10:15

green flag - q2

The pole shootout session is go!

10:13

Gresini has gotten Marquez's bike fixed after his crash, but he will start the Q2 session on his #2 machine.

10:12

q2 group

This is who will be fighting for pole this morning:

  • Bagnaia
  • Vinales
  • Quartararo
  • Morbidelli
  • Bastianini
  • Acosta
  • Binder
  • Espargaro
  • Bezzecchi
  • Oliveira
  • Martin
  • M.Marquez
10:09

It may not be a standout result, but 15th and 16th is the best qualifying result for factory Honda duo Marini and Mir - highlighting just how miserable 2024 has been for them.

10:08

Huge disappointment for Jack Miller, who will start an equal season-worst 19th on his KTM. Wonder how much that soft front tyre choice worked against him?

10:07

missing out in q1

Out of qualifying is:

  • Di Giannantonio
  • R.Fernandez
  • Marini
  • Mir
  • Zarco
  • A.Fernandez
  • Miller
  • Nakagami
  • A.Marquez
  • Rins
10:06

Chequered flag - q1

Binder holds onto top spot ahead of Oliveira to advance into Q2.

10:05

Di Giannantonio has rolled out of his final lap, so 13th is the best he can hope for.

10:04

Di Giannantonio jumps up to third but he's still 0.139s outside of a Q2 place.

10:04

Incident

A.Fernandez has crashed at Turn 3. He's ok.

10:03

But Binder has now gone top with a 1m31.070s!

10:02

Oliveira improves to a 1m31.146s, while team-mate R.Fernandez is second.

10:02

Good to see Di Giannantonio back on track this morning after his heavy crash on Friday. He's currently fourth in this session.

10:01

Miller and Nakagami have gone out on the soft front for this run. A few riders noted on Friday that they felt that tyre was too soft. Be interesting to see how that works out for the pair.
