2025 Official Sepang MotoGP Test - Day 1 as it happened

Recap Wednesday’s opening day of the 2025 Official Sepang MotoGP test.

The full MotoGP rider line-up takes to the track for the first time in 2025 during the Official Sepang test from Wednesday to Friday.

Rookies Ai Ogura, Fermin Aldeguer and Somkiat Chantra, factory test riders and full-time race riders from Yamaha took part in a three-day Shakedown test at the Malaysian circuit over the weekend.

The other Honda race riders aside from Chantra (Joan Mir, Luca Marini and Johann Zarco) were also eligible for the shakedown, but did not take part.

The trio, plus the likes of reigning champion Jorge Martin and new Ducati Lenovo rider Marc Marquez, will be riding a MotoGP bike for the first time since Barcelona last November.

Just five days of official pre-season testing – three at Sepang, then two at Buriram – are available before the start of the 2025 MotoGP season in Thailand on February 28.

Testing at Sepang takes place from 10am to 6pm, followed by practice starts…

04 Feb 2025
10:07

The 15-minute practice start period is now underway, with team members and fans flocking to the start-finish line.

Johann Zarco defies his holeshot device to pull a big wheelie all along the main straight!

10:01

Day 1 of testing ends with Fabio Quartararo ahead of Marc Marquez, Alex Marquez, Fermin Aldeguer, Franco Morbidelli and Joan Mir.

10:00

Marc Marquez puts in a late attack to take second place, just 0.051s behind Fabio Quartararo.

09:36

Into the last 25mins of day one and Mir has impressed by taking over 5th for Honda.

Top 4 still Quartararo, A.Marquez, Aldeguer, Morbidelli.

09:28

Raul Fernandez's Sepang test is officially over.

Trackhouse confirm he is going to fly back to Spain tonight after fracturing a metacarpal bone in his left hand.

09:25

Quartararo is posting red sectors, he only needs 0.016s to reclaim the top spot from Alex Marquez.... he finds 0.2s and retakes P1 for Yamaha.

09:21

40mins to go on day one of the Official test and it's still Alex Marquez on top with the Ducati GP24 from Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo and Gresini team-mate Fermin Aldeguer.

Joan Mir has just made it two Hondas in the top ten, with Johann Zarco leading the RC213V challenge in 7th.

09:05

Another personal best by di Giannantonio, he's now 6th fastest, just behind Marc Marquez.

Impressive from the young Italian who is riding a MotoGP bike for the first time since last October Thai Grand Prix and wasn't sure how his healing shoulder would hold up in terms of endurance.

09:03

Fabio di Giannantonio is putting in his best laps of the day and breaks into the top ten.

The GP25s are now 5th (Marc Marquez), 9th (Fabio di Giannantonio) and 15th (Francesco Bagnaia).

08:59

Top 8 with an hour of testing to go: A.Marquez, Quartararo, Aldeguer, Morbidelli, M.Marquez, Zarco, Miller, Acosta.

08:58

Morbidelli follows it up with another personal best lap, but remains in 4th (+0.376s).

08:56

Another GP24 is on the attack: Franco Morbidelli.

The new VR46 rider slots into 4th place, meaning Yamaha's Fabio Quartararo (2nd) is now the only non-GP24 in the top 4!

08:52

Johann Zarco puts Honda into fifth place and is just over half-a-second from Alex Marquez.

08:47

Over at Aprilia, now down to just two of their 2025 race riders, it's Ai Ogura in 10th as the best RS-GP with Marco Bezzecchi in 15th.

08:45

Rookie Aldeguer backs up Alex Marquez's speed by posting the fastest opening sector of the day on his GP24. The rest of the lap isn't quite as good but he still climbs from 7th to 3rd.

08:42

Just under an hour and a half to go and the orange (personal best) sectors are flashing up for Pedro Acosta and Fermin Aldeguer, but they remain 5th and 7th respectively.

08:39

Some test-best sectors by a Marquez - but it's Alex, not Marc.

Alex, quickest last November in Barcelona, finally topples Fabio Quartararo from P1 by just 0.016s with his Gresini GP24.

08:33

Info from VR46: 'Crash for Franky Morbidelli at Turn 6. Rider OK'

08:32

These are the fastest riders NOT to have ridden at the Shakedown test:

Marc Marquez (2nd)

Pedro Acosta (4th)

Alex Marquez (5th)

Franco Morbidelli (7th)

Maverick Vinales (9th).

08:31

Maverick Vinales sets his four best sectors... and rises from 14th to 9th for Tech3 KTM.

08:29

Another 'Fernandez' has crashed, this time it's Yamaha test rider Augusto, at Turn 9. 'Rider OK'.

08:28

Jack Miller (6th) is also setting some best sectors, the new Pramac Yamaha rider takes an all-black M1 to third on the timesheets (+0.622s).

08:25

So, GP25 check: Marc Marquez 2nd (+0.506s), Francesco Bagnaia 12th (+1.193s), Fabio di Giannantonio 18th (1.782s) after his earlier fall.
