Emilia Romagna MotoGP: Friday practice as it happened

Follow live updates from Friday practice at the 2024 MotoGP Emilia Romagna Grand Prix

The 2024 MotoGP season continues with the 14th round of the campaign and a second visit to Misano.

Due to the cancellation of the Kazakhstan GP, MotoGP returns to Misano two weeks after the San Marino GP for the first Emilia Romagna GP since 2021.

Jorge Martin holds a slender lead in the championship of seven points over Francesco Bagnaia, after a decision to box during a brief spell of rain in the San Marino GP backfired on the Pramac rider.

Marc Marquez comes into the second Misano round seeking a third successive grand prix victory to further reduce his 53-point deficit in the standings to Martin.

Marquez was the last winner of the Emilia Romagna GP in 2021, which marked his final victory with Honda and began a 1043-day win drought.

A test on the Monday after the San Marino GP should mean the field begins the Emilia Romagna GP much tighter than it was two weeks ago.

FP1 starts at 9:45am BST, with Practice at 2pm BST.

20 Sep 2024
10:30

Marc Marquez edges ahead of Martin with a 1m32.120s in the final seconds of FP1.

10:26

Martin finds more time to a 1m32.145s, with Marc Marquez now second with just under five minutes to go.

10:24

Jorge Martin now goes top with a 1m32.260s, which is only about half a second shy of his best FP1 lap from the San Marino GP.

10:23

Slight improvement for Acosta on this lap to a 1m32.618s.

10:21

Just as we post a top 10 update, Pedro Acosta goes ahead and puts his Tech3-run machine top of the pile with a 1m32.750s.

10:20

10 minutes to go

The track is a hive of activity with 10 minutes to go in FP1. The top 10 is currently:

  1. Quartararo
  2. Acosta
  3. Vinales
  4. Di Giannantonio
  5. Oliveira
  6. Martin
  7. A.Fernandez
  8. Marini
  9. Bastianini
  10. Binder
10:18

Quartararo extends his advantage at the top of the timesheets with a 1m32.882s.

10:17

Fabio Quartararo puts the Yamaha top of the order with a 1m33.013s as all but Yamaha team-mate Alex Rins have now put laps on the board.

10:15

Vinales improves to a 1m33.331s as the timing screen is now lighting up with best sectors all over the place!

10:11

Vinales has now taken over at the top of the order with a 1m33.534s.

10:11

20 minutes to go

It's been an odd morning session, but the order with 20 minutes to go is:

  1. Binder
  2. Miller
  3. A.Fernandez
  4. Quartararo
  5. Vinales
  6. Mir
  7. Bezzecchi
  8. R.Fernandez
  9. Bagnaia
  10. Acosta
10:10

Jorge Martin is now out on track.

10:08

Right on cue - Jorge Martin is now putting his helmet on and Enea Bastianini is heading to the end of pitlane.

10:07

The world champion finally heads out for a look at the conditions. I can't imagine his title rivals will be too far behind now.

10:05

Track is definitely getting busier now  as conditions improve. Maverick Vinales and Fabio Quartararo have joined the action.

10:04

Binder dips into the 1m33s for the first time this morning with a 1m33.843s.

10:01

Binder keeps upping his pace at the top of the timesheets as he's now posted a 1m34.212s, while a couple more riders have taken to the circuit.

10:00

Francesco Bagnaia, among others, is carrying a lovely tribute to the late Luca Salvadori on his bike this weekend.

09:59

Another gain for Binder on his seventh flying lap of the session with a 1m34.349s.

09:58

Conditions clearly can't be too bad as Binder slides the KTM into Turn 8!

09:57

Binder continues his run at the top of the order with a 1m34.673s.

09:56

Binder improves to a 1m35.411s.

09:56

Still only three lap times on the board so far. Given we've already had a race weekend at Misano and a test in the last two weeks, the riders won't be missing out on too much right now.

09:54

Binder continues to improve his lap time. He's now put in a 1m37.287s with just over 10 minutes of the session gone.

09:54

The earlier rain appears to have left quite a lot of dirt off the racing line, which the riders will have to be careful of.
