Colin Edwards has been diagnosed with a broken right collarbone after a fall in Friday practice for the Catalan MotoGP.
It means this weekend's MotoGP field is down to just 15 riders, with home hero Dani Pedrosa also absent after also breaking a collarbone, during a controversial clash with Marco Simoncelli, at the previous Le Mans round.
Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider Edwards has not missed a MotoGP race since his 2003 debut.
Both Edwards and Pedrosa are also unlikely to be fit for next weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
