Former British Champion Jay Vincent made his 250 debut with QUB Team Optimum today at the Brno circuit in the Czech Republic, after the Pulse GP team folded due to a lack of funds.
Vincent will ride with the team for the remainder of the year and spent the day acclimatizing to the Yamaha TZ250 after spending his year so far on a 500cc machine.
"I really enjoyed today!" grinned the Englishman. " It was a good thing that we agreed things in principle to ride together at the beginning of the year but things got in the way, and now we are back together again as initially planned and at a circuit that I enjoy and know well.
Vincent then went on to explain that the difference between a 250 and 500 is not just the engine size: "On the bike I need to change my riding style from the 500 way I have been doing all year and try and get my corner speed back rather than relying on accelerating out of the corners with sheer grunt. It doesn't work like that in 250s where you have to be a lot smoother!
"We have improved the bike no end today as I get into the gist of things and rattled off many laps to leave us with a few ideas for tomorrow," he concluded.
Vincent ended the 250cc first qualifying session in twenty-third position (out of 32 riders), 3.682secs off Harada's provisonal pole time.
