The Repsol Honda attack has been halved with just one day of the British Grand Prix meeting over, after Tohru Ukawa was ruled out of action following a heavy crash in Friday free practice.

Both Ukawa and team-mate Valentino Rossi fell in that first session of the weekend, but the Japanese rider's incident was by far the more violent of the two. Descending the Craner Curves, the Honda snapped out of control and began to somersault wildly, narrowly missing the prone Ukawa as it continued its flight. The rider had to be helped from the track and was later transferred to a local hospital, where he was diagnosed with a broken foot and three cracked ribs.

Rossi crashed at the slower Goddards hairpin, although his impact with the tarmac was no less damaging. The Italian briefly joined his team-mate in hospital, but was later discharged with a broken right thumb, grazes to his hip and a concussion. The later condition is the most concerning for the Honda team, especially as Rossi has no memory of the accident, and he will have another scan tomorrow before deciding whether he is able to participate further.
