Cartoon: Gibernau runs out.
As the saying goes, if Sete Gibernau didn't have bad luck, he'd have no luck at all - and the Catalan's 2005 curse returned on the last lap of Sunday's Czech Republic Grand Prix at Brno.
After qualifying on pole and trading the lead roughly equally with world champion Valentino Rossi over the preceding 21-laps, Gibernau entered the last lap a few tenths behind the Yamaha star and his first victory of the season.
However, after delivering a 'perfect' last lap, Rossi looked to have his ninth win of the season in the bag as the pair approached the final few corners - but at the very least Gibernau appeared assured of second position, a result which would have propelled him into second in the world championship standings.
But disaster struck when Sete's Movistar Honda spluttered to a halt with just two corners to go, having been starved of fuel - the Spaniard's exit promoting Repsol Honda's Max Biaggi, who had started the race way down in tenth place, into an unexpected podium position... and that second place in the world championship standings.
