PICTURES: Gardner wins at Goodwood.

1987 500cc world champion Wayne Gardner was back in race winning action last weekend at the unique Goodwood Revival in Great Britain.

The annual event recreates a bygone era at what was once Britain's leading motor racing venue, with fans - dressed in fashion from the forties, fifties and sixties - watching cars and motorcycles of the same period. The lovingly restored circuit is unchanged from its heyday and no modern vehicles are allowed within the circuit perimeter throughout the weekend. There are also theatrical sets that bring the past back to life.

46-year-old Gardner, a winner of 18 500cc grands prix, was racing in the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy Race on a 500cc 1966 Matchless G50 - alongside the likes of Niall Mackenzie, Michael Rutter and Chas Mortimer - and proved he'd lost little of his speed by qualifying 4.5secs quicker than his nearest rival, then winning Saturday's race by 23.5secs and setting a fastest lap 2.8secs clear of his rivals!

The Australian, a former factory Honda rider, scored a second victory on the Sunday, albeit by the smaller margin of 2.4secs, with a best lap 1.5secs clear of the competition. Duncan Fitchett rode a Manx Norton to second behind Gardner in both races, with Matchless G50 rider Tim Jackson third in both outings.

The 2006 Goodwood Revival, which compliments the Goodwood Festival of Speed, enjoyed an attendance of 110,000.
