Mir tops morning warm-up ahead of Austrian MotoGP
2020 Austrian MotoGP – Warm-up Results
Joan Mir got his Austrian MotoGP race day off to a perfect start as he topped the timesheets for Round 4 of the 2020 MotoGP World Championship at the Red Bull Ring.
Just as it was in qualifying on Saturday, lap times were close once more with the top three on different machines split by only 0.028secs.
Mir on the Suzuki – starting sixth this afternoon – headed up Pol Espargaro, who will be gunning for KTM’s second consecutive win from fifth position, and pole sitter Maverick Vinales on the factory Yamaha.
Takaaki Nakagami gave Honda hope of a strong result from the hands of the Japanese rider with a run to fourth position on the LCR machine, while another member of the ‘2019-club’ Johann Zarco was again up there on the Ducati.
For many the pre-race favourite from fourth on the grid and the man writing all the headlines for the past 24 hours, Andrea Dovizioso was sixth best in warm-up, ahead of championship leader Fabio Quartararo and fellow front row starter Jack Miller.
Alex Rins and Franco Morbidelli rounded out the top ten on their respective Suzuki and Yamaha machines, followed up by Danilo Petrucci, Valentino Rossi and top Aprilia rider Bradley Smith.
Czech MotoGP winner Brad Binder’s tough weekend continued as he languished down in 16th position, while Cal Crutchlow was also off the pace in the short morning session in 19th.
While sunny conditions greeted the riders on track for morning warm-up, forecasts suggest it could be very different for this afternoon with rain being predicted just ahead of the race.
