Martin considering ‘surgery this week’ after second Misano crash
MotoGP rookie Jorge Martin is considering a second surgery this season following another crash in Misano.
Martin, who had already crashed three times during Saturday’s qualifying day, went down for the second consecutive race at Misano after losing the front at turn one - both crashes happened whilst behind eventual series champion Fabio Quartararo.
Until the 23 year-old’s race ending fall, a three-rider group led by Alex Rins, Quartararo and Martin were closing in on the top four riders.
Speaking after the race, Martin added: "Until the crash it (race) wasn’t so bad. I was saving some tyres until the end of the race.
"At that point of the race I was trying to follow Fabio [Quartararo] because he was strong. We were closing the gap to the front group, to Aleix [Espargaro] and the top four, so it’s a pity because I was feeling strong but yeah, I lost the front and luckily I’m okay because it was a really fast crash.
"I’m happy about the weekend because in wet conditions we really improved and in the dry with only the warm-up I was competitive."
Martin remained in the gravel for a short period of time following his crash, and although the Spaniard feels ‘great physically’, a muscle issue in his leg could lead to surgery as early as this week.
Martin’s first surgery earlier this year was following a crash at Portimao - the same venue as next week’s race, after breaking his scaphoid, first metacarpal in his right hand and his right ankle.
"I’m not so confident because I had this big injury in Portimao, but anyway, physically I feel great but I still have a problem with one muscle in my leg," added Martin.
"I’m struggling to change gears after ten laps, so I will go to the doctors tomorrow and maybe have surgery this week, I don’t know yet."
