Last weekend's winner Morbidelli was hit by the sliding Aprilia of Pol's brother on lap 1, leaving him at the back of the pack, where he was soon joined by fellow home star Rossi, who fell from seventh place, and Binder, who crashed while in third!
Binder then fell for a second and final time, while Rossi later pulled into the pits and retired.
Miller also retired with some kind of technical problem during the frantic early stages.
Dovizioso now leads the world championship by just one point heading into Barcelona next weekend.
Stefan Bradl, who was replacing injured reigning world champion Marc Marquez, withdrew from the remainder of the weekend due to recent surgery for nerve problems in his hand.
