2021 British MotoGP, Silverstone - Full Race Results
Fabio Quartararo has extended his MotoGP title lead with a fifth victory of the season in the 2021 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
The Monster Yamaha star was joined on the podium by Alex Rins (his first rostrum of the season) and an emotional Aleix Espargaro, who won a thrilling last-lap duel with Jack Miller to make history with the RS-GP's best-ever result.
The debut Aprilia MotoGP podium certainly won't hurt the chances of Maverick Vinales joining the field next time at Aragon...
Chilly conditions prompted many riders to switch to softer rubber on the grid, with Quartararo and title rival Joan Mir fitting the soft front while Marc Marquez joined Repsol Honda team-mate and pole qualifier Pol Espargaro on the soft rear.
Pol Espargaro held his advantage at the start of the race, but Marquez was down and out at Turns 8-9, taking rookie Jorge Martin with him. The Pramac Ducati rider had put a hard pass on the #93 a few corners before, the pair tangling as Marquez tried to slice back underneath.
Aleix briefly made it an Espargaro one-two before Quartararo worked his way to the front and began to pull clear.
Next to threaten the Espargaros was 2019 Silverstone winner Rins, who fought through from tenth on the grid to take third from Pol Espargaro halfway through the 20 laps.
Rins then passed Aleix Espargaro when the Aprilia rider ran wide, but Quartararo was already 3.5s ahead and the Suzuki rider instead had his hands full keeping the RS-GP at bay.
Ducati's Jack Miller then joined the rostrum battle with Rins and Aleix, while early leader Pol Espargaro plus the likes of Joan Mir, Francesco Bagnaia and Valentino Rossi faded down the order in the closing laps.
KTM's Red Bull Ring winner Brad Binder made it all six manufacturers inside the Silverstone top six.
With Maverick Vinales splitting from Yamaha after Austria, test rider Cal Crutchlow was moved from Petronas Yamaha to the Monster Yamaha team at Silverstone. As a result of Crutchlow's move, SRT called-up Moto2 rider Jake Dixon to make a MotoGP debut in front of his home fans, riding in place of the injured Franco Morbidelli on the team's 2019-based A-Spec bike.
Crutchlow crossed the line in 17th, equalling his Austrian race results, while Dixon completed the distance as the final finisher in 19th.
Aprilia's Lorenzo Savadori abandoned his return from ankle injuries due to pain during Friday practice.
This weekend's event marks MotoGP's first visit to Silverstone since before the Covid pandemic, in 2019.
