Spencer lands Charlotte pole.

Jimmy Spencer earned his third Winston Cup series pole position in qualifying for the UAW-GM Quality 500 last night, and will form a Haas-Carter 1-2 in the starting line-up.

Spencer, who has ironically suggested that he might leave the team next year, outpaced Todd Bodine by one tenth of a second - or 0.7mph - to take top spot, setting up the second Haas-Carter front row in three months. The pair last occupied the two top placings back at Chicagoland in July.

Stand-in Kenny Wallace completed an unlikely looking top three, taking the Pennzoil car more usually piloted by Steve Park to the inside of row two. He will be partnered there by the increasingly impressive Ryan Newman, who made it three Fords in the top four.

Tony Stewart was the best placed of the true household names, taking sixth spot behind Kevin Lepage, but it was a poor night for the championship contenders, with Ricky Rudd and hot favourite Robby Gordon lining up only 19th and 20th respectively.

Behind Stewart, veterans Bobby Labonte and Mark Martin edged out Dale Earnhardt Jr for the fourth row. Leading rookie contender Kevin Harvick had to make do with 14th spot, separated from the Bud car by a tenth - and Jerry Nadeau, Johnny Benson, Joe Nemechek and Sterling Marlin - but was still 15 spots ahead of rival Casey Atwood's Dodge.

Six cars failed to make the cut, among them the Richard Childress entries of Jeff Green and Robby Gordon, Joining the pair on the sidelines will also be Petty Enterprises duo Kyle Petty and Buckshot Jones, along with Derrick Cope and Frank Kimmel.

Jeff Burton, Elliott Sadler, Mike Wallace, Ricky Craven, Dave Blaney, Terry Labonte and Kurt Busch all took provisionals.
