Tigers' first problem came when reserves Paul Cooper and James Birkinshaw were on the receiving end of a Fen Tigers 5-1 in the second race, only for Sheffield to hit back to level. But the Fen men struck again in Heat 6, when Ashworth crashed while leading.

A 4-2 from the lively Joel Parsons and Birkinshaw in the eighth put Sheffield back in it, while rookie Ben Hopwood was drafted into Heat 9 as the Owlerton side suffered a catalogue of problems in the pits, and he responded with a crucial third place after former Tiger Kyle Legault crashed out.

Sheffield levelled by Heat 10 and that's how it stayed until they were hit by a sucker punch! 5-1 in Heat 14 from Jason King and Jamie Smith, with James Cockle and Birkinshaw trailing in their wake.

It meant Machin's side needed to hit back in the last race - and Compton and Ashworth responded superbly to beat King and Shaun Tacey.

Machin said: "Mildenhall are a tough side on their own patch and to come away with a draw in our first away outing was highly promising. We had good scores right down the line, with Joel Parsons looking good, although Andre was again fantastic."
