Smith becomes new Queensland champion.

Scott Smith is the new Queensland champion after taking the title from Mick Poole, John Jorgensen and Davey Watt.

Not to be confused with the British rider of the same name, Smith was on-song all night ripping through the qualification stage with just one defeat - to Poole - which he then avenged in the final.

Poole's runner-up position showed, as he did in the Australian Grand Prix, that there's life in the old dog yet whilst Jorgensen held the form he's been showing in the Ivan Mauger Golden Helmet series.

Smith has had a couple of successful seasons in the Premier League with Newport, where he is linked with a return in 2003 to again link up with compatriots Craig Watson and Frank Smart.
