Symmons Plain already a winner for WPS.

When WPS Racing's David Besnard and Craig Baird aim up for this weekend's Ferodo Triple Challenge in Tasmania, they'll be buoyed in the knowledge the team knows how to win at the Symmons Plains circuit.

When WPS Racing's David Besnard and Craig Baird aim up for this weekend's Ferodo Triple Challenge in Tasmania, they'll be buoyed in the knowledge the team knows how to win at the Symmons Plains circuit.

Enjoying just its second year of competition in the Australian V8 Supercar Series in 2005, the Gold Coast outfit recorded a memorable maiden victory on the Apple Isle and, with recent momentum seeing Besnard and Baird combine for an eighth place at Bathurst and back that up with some impressive individual form at Surfers Paradise, the team is confident of another frontrunning performance this weekend.

"To break through for our first race win was a fantastic result for the entire team and, in this game, you really do savour any success, because it really is difficult in such a tight series," Besnard said, "Sure, we got lucky with strategy, but we did have genuine good pace in the car and it was a sensational confidence boost for everyone involved.

"Having a competitive team-mate like Bairdo on board has helped both of us in our driving and we're able to try different things with each of the cars and compare data. There's no doubt the car's going better now than it was this time last year, so we will be competitive and anything could happen."

Baird has continued to graft some steady consistency in 2005, and was on track for another top ten finish on the Gold Coast before an oil line problem in the third and final race put paid to that result. However, the talented New Zealander remains upbeat, and is just as excited to be heading to a track that holds such significance at WPS Racing.

"It's been a great transition after joining WPS Racing, and Bezzy and I appreciate the fact we've gradually developed a package that's continued to get stronger as the season has progressed," the Kiwi said, "Sure, it's taken a while, but we now have genuine horsepower and have seen many improvements across the board, so there's no reason why we can't put it together in Tasmania."
