World Rally Championship drivers pay tribute to Ken Block
Block succumb to his injuries in the incident, which is reported to have happened close to his home in Utah. It is understood the vehicle upended and landed on top of him as he navigated a steep slope.
The 55-year-old’s passing was confirmed by his Hoonigan Racing team who described him as “a visionary, a pioneer and an icon and most importantly, a father and husband”, adding: “He will be incredibly missed”.
The charismatic father-of-three made his name producing a series of edge-of-your seat ‘Gymkhana’-style videos in an array of exotic cars. His most recent took him to Las Vegas in an all-electric Audi S1 dubbed ‘Hoonitron’ and has already attracted more than one million views online.
His love of competing took him to Rally America, Global Rallycross, and the FIA World Rally Championship. He made his debut in the latter at Rally Mexico in 2007 aboard a Subaru Impreza. Three seasons later, Block agreed terms to compete under the Monster World Rally Team with M-Sport Ford.
In all, he started 25 events, and chalked up a number of top 10 finishes in the process. Although never considered a serious challenger for silverware or top honours, his eye-catching driving style on the stages meant he quickly attracted a vast support base.
Among those to pay tribute to Block - who co-founded the skate-wear clothing brand DC Shoes - was 8-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Ogier.
“Ken was a visionary, so passionate and inspiring,” he said. “He knew like no other how to combine motorsport and a big show. He lived his life to the fullest and I'll never forget his smile and laugh. Sending my thoughts and support to his family and friends.”
Estonian Ott Tanak added that he was “a visionary and a true legend who has inspired so many of us”.
Thierry Neuville labelled Block “a true icon of our sport. A passionate racer and real pioneer that inspired so many of us”, with his Hyundai Motorsport team-mate Dani Sordo describing his passing as “a tough day for motorsport and sports”.
Oliver Solberg – the son of 2003 WRC title winner, Petter – had a close association with the American given their ties with energy drink giant, Monster.
“My hero, my friend. You were a true inspiration and I will be forever grateful for the opportunities and help you gave me,” said the young Swede.
Block is survived by his wife, Lucy, and three children.
