Colin McRae has retired from Rally Portugal after stopping on SS8 with a terminal engine problem.
The Scotsman had been lying in seventh place 2mins 28.6secs off leader Makinen heading into the 18.44km Amarante stage.
However his Ford Focus' Cosworth engine gave up on him almost within sight of the stage finish, leaving McRae with no championship points after three events.

Meanwhile Petter Solberg was forced to make emergency repairs following front suspension damage to his Subaru. The Norwegian completed the stage - but lost over 18 minutes and decided to retire for safety reasons.
SS8 was won by Rovanpera, who has now closed to within 5.1secs of overall leader Tommi Makinen.
