Delecour quits Mitsubishi.

World Rally veteran Francois Delecour has terminated his contract with Mitsubishi, following their decision to sit out the 2003 World Rally campaign.
Delecour joined the Japanese team after resurrecting his career in the third Ford Focus during the 2001 season, and replaced Subaru bound Tommi Makinen as the team's number one last year alongside Alister McRae.
However, what had looked like a clever career move soon turned sour, with the car rarely able to challenge the front running Peugeots, Fords and Subarus. Then, to add to the teams misery, long term backer Marlboro switched their support to the factory 206s at the end of the year.
Faced with an uncompetitive car and lack of sponsorship, Mitsubishi made a late decision to spend a 'year out' during 2003 developing a new car - to the surprise of both drivers.
Although Mitsubishi have stated openly that both McRae and Delecour are free to chase other drives this season, few have been forthcoming due to their existing contracts.
At 40 years of age, Delecour is believed to be less patient than his Scottish team-mate and so has come to an amicable settlement to leave Mitsubishi, effective immediately.
