Laconi takes Monza double.

It was a perfect day today for new World Superbike Championship leader, Regis Laconi, who took victory in the second race of the day to add to his points tally from the day's first WSBK race win.

As a complete contrast, local hero and previous points leader, Frankie Chili, suffered an off as he chased down eventual second-placed man, Chris Vermeulen. As Chili returned to the pits, it was the end of a very unlucky weekend for the highly popular Italian.

Laconi was able to make off into the distance with seeming ease once more, whilst behind him Chris Vermeulen was unchallenged to second.

Noriyuki Haga suffered yet another engine failure, whilst the battle of the race was between James Toseland and Garry McCoy for third place.

Lap after lap McCoy and Toseland diced, with Toseland having the straight line advantage, but this was tempered with rear brake issues and the pace of McCoy in the twisty bits.

McCoy however, who had looked so good in both races today, overcooked it and made a mistake on the final lap coming into the chicane and allowed Toseland an easy run to third place.

Leon Haslam came home in a solid fifth place whilst Troy Corser won through against Marco Borciani to take sixth place.

Chris Vermeulen's result was later nulled after the Ten Kate rider was disqualifed for a non-functioning tilt switch.
