It was a rough start to FP2 for Aruba.it Ducati as Rinaldi had to wait 15 minutes before leaving pit lane following a clutch problem, while team-mate Scott Redding was held in the garage even longer.

Once Rinaldi did get out on track, the 26 year-old wasted no time in showing the type of pace that saw him finish FP1 in second. The Italian went one tenth faster than Jonathan Rea’s top time on just his second lap.

Redding was given a black technical flag halfway through FP1 as smoke was coming from the rear of his Ducati machine. Redding was unable to rejoin the session and finished 12th. The 2019 BSB champion finally got out on track in FP2 with 22 minutes to go and finished fifth in the end

Six-time world champion Rea put early FP1 issues to his Ninja ZX-10RR behind him to claim third - half a second down on Rinaldi.

The first crash of the day in WorldSBK didn’t come until FP2, when Lucas Mahais lost the front at the final corner while running in an impressive fifth place. Chaz Davies and Tito Rabat both suffered late crashes at turn 13. Alvaro Bautista also fell during the final stages of FP2 at turn four. All riders were ‘ok’.

Redding gave Toprak Razgatlioglu a lift back to pit lane after the checkered flag dropped as the Pata Yamaha rider ran out of fuel. The Turkish rider was fourth overall.

Razgatlioglu topped the opening free practice session ahead of Rinaldi and Garrett Gerloff.

The top two riders from March’ pre-season test at Misano were fastest during the opening stages as Rinaldi led from Razgatlioglu.

The battle continued all the way until the flag as Razgatlioglu pipped the Italian by just half a tenth.

Gerloff joined Razgatlioglu and Rinaldi in setting a sub 1m 35s lap during FP1, which was half a second better than Chaz Davies’ effort.

It was an impressive showing on home soil for WorldSBK rookie Axel Bassani who spent much of the morning session inside the top five.
